New single from Moris Tepper - “Power To The Homies”

Moris Tepper is a legendary guitarist, songwriter, and visual artist perhaps best known for his work with Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Frank Black, Robyn Hitchcock, and many others. His new LP Building A Nest will be released on April 5, 2024.  It’s his seventh album in two decades of exploration and growth as a solo artist. This album cements his status as a leader in his own right, and finds him depicting a world of its own in a more intimate, reflective state.

“Power To The Homies” is a song which details an epic journey of childhood friends who regain connection after a lifetime of searching to find themselves. These are real-life characters, and include Tepper’s collaborators on the track; Eric Feldman, Rob Laufer, Mike Hamilton and Richard Redus. The bittersweet sentiment is underscored by almost hidden layers of dissonant chord voicings, a yearning woven into a reflection of distance and time.

“I find that, through time, I’ve disconnected from relationships of the past. This [song] is about reconnecting to that past, honoring and loving it. This song is about sending love.”

Tepper has crafted stories of human love, devotion, isolation, and despair...life's passions and absurdities, enhanced with ruminative instrumental interludes. As with his brushes, he toys with the balance of form and abstraction, and his songwriting has elevated as his language has become more succinct. Building A Nest is a high water mark in Tepper’s career, and upon one listen it’s clear that the water is still rising.
