Daniel Knox
Evryman For Himself

LSE 020 LP / CD / Digital

Daniel Knox moved to Chicago from Springfield in 1999 to attend film school. Frustrated with classes, he spent most nights sneaking into the Hilton Tower’s Grand Ballroom where he taught himself to play their piano. Years later, he has amassed a dark and diverse repertoire, addictive as much for its narrative and lyrical deftness as for its musical lure.

With comparisons being made to songwriters such as Randy Newman, Richard Swift and Antony & the Johnsons, Knox - who has already shared stages with Damon Albarn, Rufus Wainwright, and the Handsome Family - is fast living up to the London Evening Standard's proclamation that he's "a name to watch".

Knox recorded Evryman for Himself, mostly in his kitchen, with contributions from David Coulter (Damon Albarn, Nick Cave) and Ralph Carney (the B52's, Tom Waits, The Black Keys). It is the second album in an envisioned trilogy, with the self-released Disaster and the forthcoming Chasescene.

Like an ill-tempered Irving Berlin or a Harold Arlen for the darker set, he bellows tales of disillusionment, obsession, and criminal intent. A rogue at the piano, Knox croons and sneers so that his cast of characters may speak.

Recent Activity:
* Appears on Jarvis Cocker's Further Complications (Rough Trade 2009)

* 'Redhanded' featured in the short film, The Taxidermist (Bertie Films, UK, winner of the Palm Springs International Film Festival 2009)

* Shared stages recently in the US with the Fiery Furnaces, Sharon van Etten, and A Hawk and a Hacksaw

* Named by Time Out London in a preview of '2009's Hottest Music Acts'

* 'Me and My Wife' on the BBC 6 Sunday Service (Feb 2010)

* Performed at Robert Wilson's Watermill Center with Rufus Wainwright and Jessye Norman (Sept 2008)

* Performed with David Lynch at the Chicago premier of Inland Empire (Jan 2007)

Press:

"Knox has made such a good character out of himself that he hardly needs alternate personas...these are short stories told in ellipses, the images haunting and indefinite."
-Dusted

"..haunting debut, which brings misanthropes and misfits to life with dry wit and offbeat details."
-Mother Jones Review (May/June 2011)

"He is a crooner, a commentator, and marvelous storyteller.....Knox is a special talent and a truly gifted singer/songwriter."
-The Deli

"Knox is deft in the language of misanthropy, a gleeful villain...a fascinating little gem of a record... a careful discourse on genre, intelligently wrought by a skillful artist."
-Windy City Rock

"..haunting and direct and painful and smells vaguely of poison.."
-Yvynyl

Past Press:

"Daniel Knox is one of the most important singer songwriters of the moment. His whole approach is worthy of note and anyone who is unfamiliar with his beautiful and unique art should buy his records. I am blessed to know and have worked with him on several occasions and each time was exquisite."
- David Coulter, musician/curator/producer (Damon Albarn, Sandy Dillon, Antony, Nick Cave)

"With a clarion voice somewhere between Caruso and Leon Redbone, [he] frequently haunts the Hungry Brain on West Belmont, plunking out beautiful, heartfelt tunes that evoke the classic, near-traditional songwriting of Paul Williams or Randy Newman"
- Chicago Sun Times

"A name to watch"
- London's Evening Standard

“Do yourself a favor and listen to Daniel Knox’s ‘Ghostsong’ . . . Never has something so mean been so beautiful.”
- Robyn O’Neil, The Believer Magazine
